How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Healthy

*Collaborative post*

When it comes to owning a dog there are so many different things you need to consider in order to ensure they’re living a happy and healthy life. Dogs can live up to 15-20 years depending on their breed, and no matter what you do as a dog owner you need to ensure you’re doing everything you can to ensure them a long and happy life.

Whether you’ve owned a dog for years or you’re considering bringing one into your home, it’s important you know exactly how to look after them and give them the life they deserve.

With that in mind, here are 11 things you can do to ensure your dog is happy and healthy:

  • Ensure They Go For Regular Checkups And Have All Their Vaccinations

One of the most important things you can do to ensure your dog is happy and healthy is taking them for regular checkups and vaccinations. Although they may not enjoy going to the vets, they’ll definitely be thankful you’re doing your part to keep them safe.

If you’re unsure whether or not your dog has had their vaccinations, the best thing to do is book them into the vets or a checkup. They’ll be able to offer you the best possible advice and advise you as to whether or not they’ll need them.

  • If You Think Something Is Wrong, Take Them To The Vets

If you think your dog is coming down with something or that they may be injured, get them booked into the vets for an appointment as soon as you possibly can. It may be that you’re worrying for no reason but it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when they can’t tell you what’s wrong.

  • Feed Them A Healthy Diet, Ensuring They have A Few Treats Each Day

There are lots of different types of dog foods available for you to purchase, but it’s important you’re getting one that is considered healthy if you want your dog to eat a balanced diet. Whilst it’s okay for them to have treats every now and again, it’s easy to get carried away and overfeed your dog with processed food if you’re not careful.

When it comes to treats it’s important they’re getting them every single day as positive reinforcement. Stick to the recommended guidelines for consumption and they’ll be absolutely fine!

  • Ensure They’ve Always Go Fresh Water

Having fresh water at all times is vital for your dogs’ health, so ensuring you’re checking their bowl as often as you can. If you’re worried you’re not going to be able to give them fresh water whilst you’re at work, you can purchase a water fountain that dispenses it for them.

  • Find Out What Treats They Like

Whilst giving your dogs treats will definitely keep them happy, finding the ones they really like will make them even happier! There are lots of different treats on the market but it won’t be long before you’ve found what they truly love.

  • Take Them For At Least One Walk A Day

Dogs need an active lifestyle in order to stay both happy and healthy, especially when they’re a breed that naturally has more energy. Make sure you’re taking them on at least one long walk a day in order for them to get enough exercise.

If you have the time, however, the recommended amount of times to walk your dog each day would be 2-3 times.

  • Stick To A Regular Routine

Although it may not seem like it, dogs can recognise a routine. Whether it’s the time of day you wake up and go to bed, whether or not you go to work on the weekends or the time you all sit down to eat – after a certain amount of time they’ll be able to sense what time of day it is.

Because of this, it’s important you’re trying not to deviate from your routine too much. You may find that any major changes may affect your dogs’ mood, especially if they find it hard to settle and get nervous about change. If you are going to change your routine, doing slowly and reinforce your dog with treats along the way.

  • Ensure They’re Not Left On Their Own For Too Long

Dogs are very sociable animals and don’t like to be left on their own for long periods of time. If you spend a lot of time at work during the day make sure you either have a dog sitter or someone to check in on your dog for an hour or so during the day.

If you don’t have someone to visit them during the day they’ll start to get lonely and pine for you, causing them stress and making them unhappy.

  • Play With Them On A Daily Basis

As mentioned above, dogs are incredibly social, which means they absolutely love to play. Buy them lots of different toys and make sure you’re taking at least half an hour out of your day to play with them. If you’re looking for great toys to purchase consider rope toys, tennis balls and these fun split deer antler dog chews.

  • Teach Them Lots Of New Tricks

No matter what breed of dog you have they’ll love being told they’re doing a good job when they’ve learnt something new. Continue to do this throughout your dogs’ entire life, teaching them lots of new tricks as they get older and older. For a guide on teaching dogs tricks, you can visit this website here.

  • Interact With Them And Show Them You Care

As they’re a social animal your dog will absolutely love it when you talk to them and interact with them. To keep them happy, make sure you’re talking to them every single day, showing them that you care about them and love them. If you find your dog is timid and nervous, talk about them to reassure them as often as you possibly can.
