My 2016 Soundtrack

There’s always music playing in our house. While cooking, eating, cleaning, working, I’ll have music playing. Sometimes turned down low, just to add to the background noise. Other time it’s played as loud as I can get away with. We all know loud music helps to get the housework done quicker, right? We have an apple music family subscription, which means I have basically any song I could ever dream of just a couple of clicks away. And let me tell you, I’ve put it to good use this year.

I thought I would put together a list of some of the songs I’ve listened to most in 2016; A sort of soundtrack to the year. Not all of the songs were released in 2016, but for whatever reason they’ve been on heavy rotation on my playlists this year.

Rag’n’Bone Man – Human

I came across this song by accident a few months ago while browsing through apple music. The cover for the single shows this guy’s hands, which have sugar skull tattoos on them. I’m a bit obsessed with sugar skulls and have been saving to get some tattooed on to me somewhere. So, loving his tattoos I clicked the song and WOW I’m glad I did. The song is great and his voice is something else. Both me and my husband have played this on repeat since then.

Twin Atlantic – Heart and Soul

This is an older song, released in 2014. I remember hearing it on the radio back then and I liked it, but it’s only this year that it’s made it on to my playlist. Twin Atlantic are a Glaswegian band, and they sing with a Scottish accent, and I love bands or artists who sing with a regional accent.

NEIKED ft. Dyo – Sexual

I listened to this song so much over the summer, really not putting much thought in to the words, it was just really catchy. Then one day while Caitlin was playing in the living room she started singing the words to this and I was suddenly mortified. Of course she’s only six and has no idea what it means, but still best for her not to be singing it. I had to rein it in after that and only listen to it when the kids weren’t around. Still, catchy song.

Little Mix – Shout Out to My Ex

2016 has been the year Caitlin became a little pop music fan. She’d never really had an interested before, but suddenly she knows all of the words to songs on the radio, and she loves Little Mix. I supported little Mix when they were on XFactor because two of the are from South Shields which is where I’m from. Caitlin listeners to them every night before bed now, and knows the words to most of their popular songs. This song will remind me of 2016 because it’s played everywhere at the moment, and because me and Caitlin always dance to it when it comes on.

Christine and the Queens – Tilted

This one comes courtesy of my husband who played this to death. I mean he played it over and over and over. I liked it too, and I guess it plays in to my love of accents in music, because she sings the English parts with a French accent and some of the song is in French. Whenever I hear it it’s going to remind me of this year and of my husband, and us sitting discussing the lyrics “I’m doing my face with magic marker” in our bedroom. It’s a bit weird, but weird is good.

What has been your soundtrack to 2016? Have any of my choices been on your playlists this year?

I love ‘Shout out to my ex’ and I always have it stuck in my head. My ex cheated on me so it really resonates with me and I love its message.

Great choice. I do like Human. I used to be big into music but that dropped since having kids. Really need to get back into it. I like Human but I also like James Arthur’s latest song.
