We were recently given the opportunity to try out the new Gel-A-Peel Deluxe Kit. The kit allows you to design your own cool jewellery and accessories. Caitlin is very much in to crafts and making her own things, so this looked perfect for her.
The kit comes with everything you need to get started. Included in the box is:
- 5 Gel-A-Peel gel colours
- 8 Designer nozzles
- 24 design stencils
- Clear worksheet
- Accessories – hairband, earrings, keyring
The packaging looks great, although we did have a bit of an issue with the way everything was boxed up. The gel tubes are neatly displayed in clear plastic, with the rest of the items packed in underneath. This meant that the clear plastic worksheet which you draw your designs on to arrived bent in half. The instructions tell you to bend it backwards and run it under warm water to straighten it out. We tried that, and it did straighten out a little, but we couldn’t quite get rid of the bend. It would have been better if this could have been packed flat.
To create your design, you choose a template and put it under the clear worksheet. Secure them to your work surface using tape. Then pick a colour, and attach your chosen designer nozzle. Each of the design templates have their own instructions on, so it’s important to read them before you start.
The designs included range from simple to more complex. We chose simple designs to begin, to allow Caitlin to do it herself. Following the template, you create your design by steadily squeezing the gel on to the worksheet. It comes out with ease and doesn’t require a lot of squeezing; Caitlin got the hang of it quite quickly.
Once you’ve finished with your design, you have to leave it to dry. Some of the simple designs only take two hours to dry, others can take longer depending on how many colours were needed and how thick the gel is. Make sure the worksheet is taped down well during the drying process so it doesn’t come loose and curl up! Once dry, you peel them off carefully, and they are ready to use.
The product is very simple to use, and the results are pretty effective. Caitlin tried out all kinds of designs, including these cat ears, which she thought were great.
One thing I will mention is that it’s a good idea to make thicker designs, as thin ones can snap. My children aren’t the most delicate with things so that may be part of the problem. Otherwise, it’s a great product which kept Caitlin entertained for hours, and she loved wearing her own creations.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can have a go at making your own designs. The Gel-A-Peel website has some free downloadable templates too, and if you follow Gel-A-Peel UK on twitter you will find seasonal templates.
