My Childhood Ambitions – #Blogtober16 Day 5

When I’m not blogging, I work in retail, and have done almost exclusively since I left school. Of course I would be lying if I said that retail work was my life dream. I enjoy my job, but it wasn’t what I dreamed about when I was ten. No, when I was ten I had ambitions.

I think all children do, don’t they? My daughter talks about how she’s going to be a teacher and a vet when she grows up. My son, he’s going to build his own school and be the head master of it. Ten year old me? I was going to be a fire fighter.

I can remember the fire service visiting my primary school. They did some demonstrations and taught us about fire safety, and I loved it. They also tested the lung capacity of everyone in the class, to see who would make a good firefighter. Imagine how proud I was when I was found to have the biggest. I was perfect or the job. Only at ten you don’t really understand the full danger of fire. It’s only as the years went on that I realised hot flames made me uneasy, and my fire fighter ambitions slowly fizzled out.

Much like my ambition to be an air hostess, until I found out I was afraid of flying. My early career choices weren’t very well suited to me really, but what would I know at such a young age?

Honestly, I’ve had more mental career changes than I’ve had hot dinners. Famous author like Enid Blyton, dancer, mechanic (??), I’ve wanted to be lots of things. I think that another common thing when you are child though, isn’t it? And that’s great, because it allows you to explore lots of ideas before you have to start making big decisions. My teenage decisions meant I didn’t end up training in the career that I had eventually decided on, which was Journalism. Although now that I’m blogging I’m pursuing a love of writing that I’ve always had. And who knows, maybe some day I can become a full time writer/ famous author like Enid Blyton…

What did you want to be when you were little? Did you go on to work in your chosen childhood career?

I wanted to be a graphic designer but ended up training in teaching. I was made redundant last year and am now stuck working behind a bar. I need to sort my career out!
