I haven’t been around here much recently, have I? Despite my post at the end of August about ending my impromptu break, I’ve still been quite quiet. You know how it is, good intentions only take you part of the way. But when life gets in the way, there’s no stopping it!
Anyway, I thought a little update would be nice because I haven’t done one in a while. It’s almost October, but I don’t want to let September pass without a mention. So, here’s what we’ve been up to this month.
Obviously September brings with it a new school term. This year Caitlin was very excited to be going back to school. Her class have a brand new teacher who only joined the school this term. They got a chance to meet her briefly at the end of last term, which was nice. Caitlin liked her from the word go, and couldn’t wait to be starting her class. Neil had even bigger changes in store for the new term, but he wasn’t so excited about them. At the end of June we learned that Neil would be moving from the mainstream class in to a special autism unit within the school. I’ll go in to more depth about the change and the reasons for it in another post, but it’s safe to say he wasn’t happy about the change.
Of course, I took the obligatory ‘first day back’ photos because that’s just what you do every year. And of course, like all other years it was impossible to get a photo of them where they were both looking at the camera/not pulling a funny face.
That was almost four weeks ago now and things are going well. We’ve slipped back in to routine quite nicely. I’m back to being rubbish at getting uniforms ready on time, and we’re all back to rushing around in the mornings. Just like the summer holidays never happened! Luckily Neil is much more settled in the autism unit than he ever was in the mainstream class. He actually likes school now, well a little bit at least!
Sticking with the school theme, last week the children celebrated European Languages day. They celebrate it every year, with each class being assigned a different European country. Most year they are asked to go in with clothes representing their country, and we usually just draw a flag on to an old white t-shirt like the lazy parents we are. But oh no, not this year. This year they had to make and wear a hat. The letter came home on Monday to give us plenty of time. Of course, we were making hours at 8pm on Thursday night. When you remember about a school project the night before hand in, the panic is real! Better than the morning of hand in at least.
Anyway, any of my twitter followers may have seen me complaining on Thursday night when I realised we hadn’t made hats yet. My husband is the most creative of the two of us, but conveniently for him he was out. So, it was left to me to come up with something.
Caitlin’s class were celebrating Poland, and Neil’s were celebrating France. With some cereal boxes, wooden sticks and some paper we managed to fashion some sort of head wear. They certainly weren’t perfect, and making them caused us a bit of stress, but we got there in the end. The kids went off to school and learned lots about their countries and looked thoroughly silly in the process.
Finally, earlier in the month I preordered my new iPhone. I’ve had the iPhone 6 plus for almost two years, and I love it, but the camera upgrade on the new 7 plus looked amazing so I decided to order it. Of course, there was a ‘global iPhone shortage’ or some nonsense, so they didn’t have enough phones to fill the preorder demand. I’ve been waiting patiently (ok maybe not quite, I checked my account for updates daily), and today it finally arrived.
I’m really looking forward to playing about with it. I’m particularly excited for the iOS update which will being the new portrait mode allowing me to take some nice photos with blurred bokeh backgrounds! So far though the camera seems much better than on my old phone, and it will be great for me when I’ve left my DSLR at home. Of course, the first thing I’ve snapped is my little kitties, because they’re very cute and photogenic. So, I’m going to end this post with a photo of my cat Poffy, shot on my brand new iPhone. Ciao!
