As a lover of books I’ve always wanted to join a book club. I recently joined the Britmums Book Club, and while it’s not a club that physically meets to discuss the books, it’s still a great opportunity to read and review books. The first book I have received through the book club is The Playground Mafia by Clare Christian and Elisabeth Kent.
The Playground Mafia is a tongue in cheek look at the different mums and dads that you might find in the school playground.
The book contains 30 characters, including things like ‘Competitive Mum’ and ‘Hot Dad’. Each character comes with a picture and bio, and they all have a little check box so you can check them off if you have spotted them in your playground. The small sections of the book make it easy to pick up and read snippets whenever you have a few spare minutes.
Unfortunately the book wasn’t really to my liking. I didn’t recognise any of the supposed ‘playground mafia’ mums or dads from the book, but maybe school playgrounds are different here in Northern Ireland, I don’t know. The stereotypes feel largely over exaggerated, which has obviously been done for comedy effect, but it isn’t something I personally find funny.
I have read many other reviews of the book, and most of them have been great. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me. If you want to read it and decide for yourself, The Playground Mafia is available from Amazon for £7.99
I received this book free of charge through the Britmums Book Club, all opinions are my own.
